    Book therapy

Every journey starts with a free online assessment with our clinical lead. We listen, we understand, and we match you with the right therapist for your needs.

    Who is therapy for?

It's for you. Whatever brought you to this page.

Most people who reach out to us aren't sure if they "qualify" for therapy. They wonder if what they're feeling is big enough to bring, or whether they should just push through like everyone else seems to. So we want to say this clearly, before anything else: if something inside you is asking for help, that is enough. You are not too much. You are not making a fuss. You are not the only one.

When your mind won't switch off

Racing thoughts at 3am, a chest that won't quite unclench, a worry that finds you the moment you sit down. Anxiety wears many costumes, and it is one of the most common things people bring to us, with a wide range of evidence-based ways through it.

    Often called:anxietypanicconstant worrysleeplessnesshealth anxiety

When everything feels heavier than it should

Tasks that used to be ordinary now take everything you've got. The colour has drained out of things you once loved. You may not know why, and you don't have to know why to come and talk.

Often called:low mooddepressionburnout fatigueloss of motivationnumbness

When something old keeps reaching into now

A memory, a sound, a feeling in the body that arrives without warning and pulls you back. The past doesn't always stay where we put it, and there are gentle, evidence-based ways to help it settle.

    Often called:traumaPTSDflashbackschildhood experiencesEMDR

When someone, or something, has gone

Bereavement, a relationship ending, a miscarriage, a job that ended badly, a version of yourself that no longer exists. Grief takes many shapes, and not all of them get a card in the post.

    Often called:bereavementlossbreakupmiscarriageredundancydisenfranchised grief

When the people closest feel the furthest away

You can be in a full house and still feel alone. Connection is one of the things therapy tends to quietly mend, both with the people around you and, often first, with yourself.

    Often called:lonelinessrelationship straindisconnectionattachmentcommunication

When who you were is no longer who you are

Becoming a parent, retiring, divorcing, coming out, a new diagnosis, an empty nest, perimenopause. Big transitions ask big questions of identity, and there's no need to answer them on your own.

    Often called:life transitionsmenopauseretirementparenthoodidentitycoming out

When the voice in your head is harsher than you'd let anyone speak to a friend

Self-criticism that never quite lifts. Shame that whispers you're the exception, that everyone else has it figured out. You don't, and they haven't, and that voice is something we can work with.

    Often called:self-criticismshameperfectionismimposter feelingslow self-worth

When you're holding everyone up and nobody's holding you

Carers, parents, leaders, the friend everybody calls first. Burnout doesn't always look like collapse, sometimes it looks like coping beautifully while quietly running out. You are allowed to come and put it down for an hour.

    Often called:carer fatigueburnoutovergivingcaregiver strainprofessional exhaustion

When nothing is "wrong", you'd just like to live more fully

Therapy isn't only for crisis. Some of the most rewarding work happens when life is broadly OK and you'd like it to feel deeper, calmer, kinder, more your own. Curiosity is a perfectly good reason to come.

    Often called:personal growthself-understandingmeaningpurposepreventative wellbeing

You don't need a diagnosis to deserve support.

Many of the people who come to us would never call what they're feeling a "mental illness". They'd call it being a person, in a hard season, with not quite enough hands. And if what you're carrying is much heavier than that, long-term illness, suicidal thoughts, addiction, voices that frighten you, a mind that works differently to most, you are no less welcome here. Specialist support is part of what we do.

Whatever brought you here, there is help.

If you are in immediate danger or thinking of acting on suicidal thoughts, please call 999 or attend your nearest A&E. The Samaritans are also available free, 24/7, on 116 123.

Why we match you, not the other way around

Our therapists are hand-picked specialists, each chosen because they are outstanding in their field. Every practitioner on our team has been personally vetted, clinically assessed and selected for the depth of their training, the breadth of their experience and their ability to build genuine therapeutic relationships. These are not generalists filling a rota. They are dedicated professionals who have devoted their careers to specific areas of mental health, and they bring that expertise directly to you.

Clinical evidence consistently shows that therapy outcomes improve when a trained professional assesses your needs and matches you with the right practitioner. This is the same principle used by the NHS, IAPT services and leading private clinics around the world. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), the independent body that sets clinical standards for the NHS, recommends that treatment should be matched to the individual, taking into account the nature of the condition, its severity, and the person's preferences. Our clinical matching process follows this principle directly: rather than asking you to choose from a list, we assess your needs and place you with the specialist best equipped to help. Choosing a therapist is one of the most important decisions you can make for your mental health, and it deserves a proper clinical assessment rather than a quick scroll through profiles. That is why we take the matching process so seriously: your needs come first, and we have the team to meet them.

We have built a growing team of more than 50 highly-qualified, professionally-registered therapists covering 73 therapeutic approaches across hundreds of specialisms. Every therapist holds recognised professional registrations, carries full clinical indemnity insurance and is supervised to Brain Gym standards. Your free assessment will be with Gareth Strangemore-Jones, Founder, CEO and Clinical Lead, or Enfys Jones, Therapy and Training Lead. Between them, they know every therapist on the team personally, and they will match you with the specialist best placed to help you get the results you deserve.

    Aligned withNICE

    Aligned with NICE clinical guidelines

National Institute for Health and Care Excellence

NICE is the independent body that produces evidence-based guidelines for the NHS. Their recommendations shape how mental health services are delivered across the United Kingdom and are widely referenced internationally. NICE guidelines consistently recommend that treatment should be matched to the individual, taking into account the nature of the condition, its severity, the person's preferences and their previous response to treatment.

Our clinical matching process follows this principle directly. Rather than asking you to browse profiles and self-select, we conduct a proper clinical assessment and place you with the specialist best equipped to help. NICE also recommends that psychological therapies should be delivered by trained, supervised practitioners using evidence-based approaches, every therapist on our team meets this standard, holding recognised professional registrations, full clinical indemnity insurance, and ongoing supervision to Brain Gym standards.

Key NICE guidelines that inform our approach include CG123 (Common mental health disorders), CG90/CG91 (Depression in adults), CG113 (Generalised anxiety disorder and panic disorder) and NG116 (Post-traumatic stress disorder). These guidelines recommend stepped care, clinical assessment, and the use of specific evidence-based therapies matched to condition and severity, all principles embedded in how Mental Health Matrix operates.

Founder's note: why we match you with a therapist

In the interests of transparency, I want to explain one of the clinical decisions that shapes how Mental Health Matrix operates. When you book therapy with us, we do not ask you to browse a list of therapists and choose one yourself. Instead, our clinical team carefully matches you with the therapist we believe is right for you, based on your presenting needs, therapeutic goals and the specialist expertise of our team.

This is a deliberate, evidence-based decision. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), the body that sets clinical standards for the NHS, recommends that treatment allocation should be guided by clinical assessment rather than patient self-selection. NICE guidelines for depression (CG90/CG91), anxiety disorders (CG113) and common mental health problems all endorse a model in which trained professionals assess the client and determine the most appropriate intervention and therapist match. The NHS Talking Therapies programme (formerly IAPT), which treats over one million people per year across England, follows exactly this approach: clients are assessed, and the service allocates them to the practitioner whose training, specialism and availability best fits their needs.

This is not unique to the NHS. Many of the most respected private therapeutic institutions around the world, including the Priory Group, the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, and leading clinics in the United States, Europe and Australasia, use clinician-guided matching rather than open client selection. The evidence consistently shows that outcomes improve when the match is made on clinical grounds: the right modality, the right level of training and the right therapeutic relationship for that specific person at that specific time.

The reason individual therapist profiles are not prominently displayed on our platform is a direct consequence of this policy. We do not want the choice to be driven by a photograph, a biography or an unconscious bias. We want it to be driven by what will actually help you most. Our team of specialist therapists is carefully selected, clinically supervised and governed to the highest standards. You can always ask us about your therapist, their qualifications and their approach; we are fully transparent about that. What we will not do is turn the therapeutic relationship into a shopping experience.

I believe this approach reflects best practice, and I want you to understand why we do it. It is a clinical strength, not a limitation.
